Objects are vessels for both our individual and collective psyche, imbued with meaning and symbolism awaiting our stories and intentions, a universal phenomenon that transcends cultural and geographical boundaries. With the body as a vehicle transporting these narratives we transform them into talismans, amulets or keepsakes—to attract love, to ward off evil, to cherish memories, or manifest strength. It evolves into a social event that is observed or experienced by people across different parts of the world, often sharing similar characteristics or patterns. As Orhan Pamuk once said: “I don’t want to be a tree, I want to be its meaning”, from the novel My Name Is Red (1988). Karin and Cynthia’s exhibition The Secret Life of Things invites you to explore the intricate relationships between form, material, and meaning.

Artists

Karin Herwegh

Karin Herwegh is a Dutch visual artist. Her work has developed from jewelry and small silver figures — made using the lost-wax method — to larger, (wearable) sculptural objects in wood. Avoiding machinery, she uses only hand tools, which, in addition to direct contact with the material, also determine the pace at which an object is created. Her work stems from one overarching idea: la condition humaine. It has a narrative character without telling a specific story. A strong, nuanced style gives the figures great expressiveness and, at the same time, a sense of tranquillity. Herwegh has presented her work in galleries, fairs, and biennials in Munich, Paris, Milan, London, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Tokyo, and Bangkok.

Cynthia Nge

Cynthia Nge is a Malaysian–New Zealand artist based in the South of France. With a formal background in graphic design and applied arts, she worked as a visual designer for over thirteen years before returning to a more tactile practice rooted in working by hand, primarily with metal and ceramics. Her work developed from her jewellery line, Minicyn, founded in Paris, and remains deeply influenced by nature, design, and antiquity. Moving between disciplines, she combines an ongoing studio practice with the creation of unique pieces conceived for thematic exhibitions.
