I inherited of the ZANNOCLOU name from the community where I put down roots. I’m going to tell you what my accessible memories say about me. I may have first appeared in the early 19th century, adorning the ears of a Nubian woman sculpted by a French artist. I am then visible in the ears of elegant Caribbean women in studio photographs, paired with the jewelry of yesteryear worn with traditional attire. I am even depicted in colonial paintings as an imposing symbol of the splendor of the women portrayed. And then I disappear. I become a myth, a legendary piece of jewelry rarely spoken of. I present myself to you here as a piece of commemorative jewelry, as a gateway to a heritage of identity, and as an architectural object shrouded in mystery. Let us reflect together on the place I occupy as a jewelry artifact. Let us explore the creative laboratory of the metamorphosis of the jewelry identified as ZANNOCLOU, establishing a dialogue between preservation and innovation.

Adeline Chapin is engaged in a process of research and creation that allows her to explore the
jewelry of Martinican culture and, in doing so, to foster a space for exchange and knowledge-sharing
centered on identity-defining jewelry. A professional archivist and collector, she has worked for
several years in the fashion and luxury sectors and participates in artist residencies focused on
promoting the cultural heritage and foundational codes of Martinican jewelry. This exciting journey,
which brings her two fields of work together, allows her to tell the story of contemporary Creole
jewelry through her creative project: Calendé.
